An Historic Day!

Yesterday, anyone who saw the the inaugural events witnessed history as President Obama became the first African-American president of the United States. As I reflect on the meaning of this day I feel as if Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream of equality is one step closer to being fully realized. Look how far we've come in just 40 years. The election of President Obama has given me many hopes but it also has a very special meaning for me as a disabled person. It gives me hope because it was not all that long ago that FDR chose to hide his disability from the American people out of fear of what they would do if they found out he was disabled. Back then disabled people were seen as worthless people and some even thought were a threat to the gene pool. Back then disabled people were shunned and many people with disabilities spent their lives locked away in state institutions. Many of them became victims of the eugenics movement which was sanctioned by the courts just like segregation. Today things have changed dramatically and disabled people used many of Dr. King's strategies in the in their struggle to extend civil rights to people with disabilities. The Disability Rights Movement eventually culminated with the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Unfortunately, there are still many people who believe that disabled people are incapable of accomplishing anything just as they did with African-Americans. The election of President Obama gives me great hope that one day instead of looking at someone in a wheelchair and just noticing the wheelchair people will instead look at us and see us for the people we are. My hope is that some day people with disabilities will be seen for who they are instead of their disability. It is my hope that we too can overcome the challenges and barriers like President Obama has done. I hope that one day people with disabilities will be noticed for the talents they have to offer rather than their disabilities. Thank you Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and President Obama for giving us that hope! Thank you Almighty God for making this day possible!

This blog will focus on contemporary issues in American Public Administration with a special emphasis on legal immigration and refugees living in the US. My aim is to not only use my blog to bring to light the issues that immigrants and refugees face when they come to the US, but also apply these issues to public administration theories and practices in an attempt to find possible solutions for them.
